What to expect

With kaleidoscopic streetscapes and a catchy Caribbean ambience, the colonial city of Puerto Plata is a visual treat. Its location between the mountains and the sea adds natural drama to the setting, and there's plenty to explore. On this whistle-stop tour, you'll discover the city's highlights, including the historic downtown and a rum distillery. Ana, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Christopher Columbus called this area “the most beautiful land human eyes will ever see”, and when you take in the surrounding leafy green hills and out to sea, you'll have to agree with him.'

You'll visit a renowned rum distillery, where the rich aromas and flavours of the Dominican Republic's most cherished spirit await. Discover the intricate process of rum production, from the harvesting of sugar cane to the distillation and ageing in oak barrels.

After lunch, you'll have time to take snapshots of the town centre. It's a jumble of wooden colonial houses and old shops stocked with hand-rolled cigars and amber jewellery. Ana says, ‘The Amber Museum is worth a look. It has some truly ancient pieces, which have preserved flora and fauna from the Jurassic era, some 200 million years ago.' Take a leisurely stroll through the cobblestone streets, where local artisans display their crafts and offer a taste of Dominican culture. Don't miss the opportunity to interact with the friendly locals and learn about their traditions and daily life.

We believe that the lunch we were served made us very ill. Our last day and a half in DR we've been ill and going between the bed and bathroom. The only one of our group of 4 who didn't fall violently ill did not have the salad that was served
